Lecture 16: advantages and disadvantages of living in a group. Advantages include lower chance of being killed, higher chance of capturing prey. Disadvantages include competition for food, and facilitate spread of disease: meaning of dominance hierarchy, kin selection, altruism, reciprocal altruism, eusocial, haplodiploidy. Dominance hierarchy- alpha male get access to more resources and determine who gets what. Kin selection- help relatives more than strangers bc they also pass down your genes. Reciprocal altruism- expect others to return the favour in the future. Eusocial- all genetically related, but work for reproductive benefit of one individual. Haplodiploidy- males are haploid (unfertilized), while the females are diploid: calculate degree of relatedness between two individuals, given the type of relationship (parent-offspring, cousins, etc). From parents to offspring, it is half (0. 5) each time: identify why haplodiploidy can favour high levels of cooperation in social insects.
