Document Summary

Lec #20 basic mechanism of propagation of action potentials in neurons. Control animal"s behaviour by shining light on its brain. We can now make speci c neurons re at will, for a living organism. +"ve ions ooding in, and selective permeability that depolarizes membrane of neurons . If we can control polarization of neuron, we control ring, and therefore control the brain. Get control of depolarization of neurons, by putting cannelrhodopsin from chlamy into neurons of animals. Shine light on channelrhodopsin, it opens, ions ow through. Neurons can now depolarize under light, and re. how channelrhodopsin can control action potentials in neurons. Recall channelrhodopsin is a light gated ion channel. By shining light, speci cally blue light, we can get channels to open, ions to ow through, and the membrane to depolarize. possible sources of genes (ie. channelrhodopsin) for use in making transgenic organisms. Chop up chlamy genome, using restriction enzymes making sequence speci c cuts with sticky ends.
