1. 1 the discovery of microbes leads to questioning their origins. Anton von leeuwenhoek was skilled in grinding lenses and described animalcules in a specimen of the lake water. In the 1600s, vitalists thought life generated spontaneously from decaying materials by spontaneous generation. Leeuwenhoek suggested maggots arose from eggs in decaying material, not the material itself. Francesco redi found that if flies were prevented from landing on meat, it did not produce maggots. In 1861, louis pasteur discredited the idea of spontaneous generation (bk p. 11) No life will appear in the flask because microorganisms cannot reach the broth. If the life force has free access to the flask, life will appear, given enough time. In 1796: edward jenner determined that disease (smallpox) could be prevented through vaccination with a similar but milder disease- causing agent. Disease transmission does not result from a miasma ( )
