Document Summary

Population: the entire group of individuals in a study about which we want information. Sample: the part of the population we actually collect info from. We use a sample to draw conclusions about entire population. Sampling design: describes how to choose sample from population. First step in proper sample design is stating what population we want to describe. Second step is stating what we want to measure, ie. define our variables. Not all stats studies use samples that are drawn directly from the entire pop. of interest: eg. Tree shrew survey, shrews were obtained from a breeding facility vs. hedgehog flea survey, where fleas were obtained from hedgehogs in hospital: tudies of a(cid:374)i(cid:373)al (cid:271)eha(cid:448)iou(cid:396) (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t (cid:396)ealisti(cid:272)all(cid:455) capture animals from their habitat. Experiments rarely use samples from an entire pop. of interest because of practical/ethical considerations: co(cid:374)se(cid:395)ue(cid:374)(cid:272)e: (cid:272)o(cid:374)(cid:272)lusio(cid:374)s (cid:272)a(cid:374)"t al(cid:449)a(cid:455)s (cid:271)e e(cid:454)te(cid:374)ded to the (cid:449)hole populatio(cid:374)
