Document Summary
This is a fruticose lichen: standing up or hanging down. Red things are apothecia (hence british red caps) Here is the trunk of a tree, and coloured spots are lichens. Green patch on the left is one type of lichen, and the mintgreen/bright red spot is another kind of lichen. Someone who took their uv lamp w them to ecuador went around at night shining uv lights on tree trunks and showed that even inconspicuous spots can grow/flouresce under uv light. 2 ordinary looking greyish-green spots on a trunk of a tree can be differentiated as diff species if one glows blue and the other glows pink. Lichen acids react differently to fluorescent light (uv light) These ones may not fluoresce but is called christmas lichen b/c of the red and green colours. This is a classic crustose lichen; you"d have to take home the bark of the tree if you wanted to take this home.
