Most of these things are sitting in our cells waiting and with the right signal, that"s the initiator to propagate where the signal is transduced to activate the pathway or shut down something to create a physiological response. In calcium, one of the things you heard was that it plays a role in muscle contraction: your cells cannot survive with too much calcium in its cytosol, where it has to sequestered/packed away. If it isn"t, it will lead to a variety of issues, one of them being apoptosis. Individuals could trace every cell (each represents a cell division) Much of what we know occurs, but sometimes if you mutate the genome, you can increase/decrease that number. The same genes have homologs in us.
