Document Summary

Molecule: neutral entities with more than one atom linked together (bonded together) Ion: an atomic of molecular particle with a net charge. Compound: a molecule or ion with 2 or more different atoms. Ionic bonds: electrons transferred between elements (bonding between ions: covalent bonds: electrons shared (can be 1, 2, or 3 pairs) The connectivity will depend on the electronic structure of the atoms. The shape is determined by the geometry of any given atom in the molecule. Examples: linear, trigonal planar, or tetrahedral, pyramidal, or bent (certain shapes can derive from these formations, such as t shape or seesaw : these more unique shapes occur in transitional metals. Structure tells us reactivity the key to understanding the reactivity of a compound comes from understanding its structure. Molar mass, appearance, odor, density (as heat increases, density decreases because molecules get more excited, thus they spread out), melting/boiling point, solubility, etc.
