Document Summary

Electrolysis: the process by which a non spontaneous chemical reaction is forced to occur by the application of electrical energy. So basically what i think electrolysis is, is that it is when you make a reaction that would not generally happen, happen with electricity. So last section we looked at the connection between g and ecell. We know that if g is negative, then a recation will occur spontaneously. Well, through g = -nfecell we can surmise that a negative. G value will be connected to a positive ecell value. thus a spontaneous reaction has a positive ecell value. Vice versa, a non-spontaneous reaction (where the reverse reaction is positive) will occur when the reaction has a negative ecell value. Non-spontaneous reactions with ecell value < 0 can be force to occur electrochemically by using an electric current in a process called electrolysis. In electrolysis, electrical energy from an external source drives a nonspontaneous chemical reaction.
