Disability Studies 1010A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Mental Disorder, Parenting Styles, Attention
Document Summary
Personal story of a parent of a boy with adhd. Noticing signs of forgetfulness or loss of concentration. 3 categories of symptoms: hyperactivity, impulsivity, inattention. No lab test for adhd; diagnosis is purely based on symptoms. Difficult thing is that these three symptoms don"t always happen and not always together. Anxiety can be present; and easy frustration with this anxiety. Often, treatments, other than medication, are not explored. Seems to be the easy and quick solution". Often people stop taking their medications by the end of high school. Discomfort about giving psych. medication to children. Medication should be explored in conjunction with other therapies. Management needs to be a combination of short-term and long-term strategies. Adhd children need a combination of parenting styles. More reminders about how to behave in certain situations. Occurs in 3-5% of school-age children; most common psychiatric disorder in children. Despite treatment, symptoms often remain into adulthood (though behaviours do tend to change)
