English 1028F/G Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Attention Seeking, Ian Mcewan
Document Summary
There is a lot of foreshadowing for briony being the narrator however, we need to realize that her motives may not be completely altruistic. She tells the story of robbie and cecelia and leaves herself mostly out however, she only goes into detail of the letter that mentions her. In p1, she becomes the most important character she is the character, she takes sole responsibility for robbie"s conviction, downplays everyone else. Briony tells the story in some ways with an overly self-obsessed focus on herself. Briony attempts to take the blame off of robbie but also puts it onto. Paul, who she doesn"t know for sure is innocent. Robbie has a rescuer complex feels intense guilt for the leg in the tree (not stopping to bury it), the mother and son he doesn"t save, etc. As the reader, we don"t see it as robbie"s fault at all however, the self-blame he places on himself can be compared to briony.
