Film: invasion of the body snatchers (1956, don siegel) Genre as a means of understanding film. Genre: type/classification, genre study studying a group of films that can be unified by subject, theme, style, plot patterns, emotion, genre is known as a the formula of film. Genre"s can be seen as recurring patterns of similarity and repetition as well as development, unity and function across a body of films. A genre film whether a western or a musical, a screwball comedy or a gangster film involves familiar, one dimensional characters acting out a predictable story pattern within a familiar setting. Genres are based on tacit rules of filmmakers but there is room for disagreement. They are hard to define clearly easier to recognize then define. We also have sub genres within the classic genre: ex. Horror: slasher, psychological, supernatural, gore fest, torture, creature feature. Thriller: detective / murder mystery, disaster, hostage.
