Graphic and rhythmic possibilities: most extreme example of concentration on rhythm is single-frame film: each shot is only one frame long. Jump cut: when you cut together two shots of same subject but different slightly. Can be avoided by shifting camera at least 30 degrees from shot to shot (30 degree rule) psychological disturbance. Used in montage sequences and during moments of surprise, violence or: non-diegetic insert. Cuts from scene to metaphorical or symbolic shot that doesn"t belong in space & time of narrative: flashbacks, fantasy episodes or future events. Film noir (dark film) 1940s: dealt with hard-boiled detectives, gangsters, or ordinary people tempted into crime. Sound used to reinforce editing discontinuities: character"s dialogue or other diegetic sounds continue over jump cuts, forced to notice contradiction, time drops out of visual track but not soundtrack.
