History 1810E Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Henry Kissinger, Easter Offensive, Operation Linebacker Ii
Document Summary
Sino-soviet split emerged from 2 different ideas about how socialist revolutions should be conducted system. Original idea came out of the soviet union, second came out of chine in 1949. Eventually the capitalist system will come in conflict with the communist. Nikita khrushchev didn"t believe that- he advocated peaceful coexistence. Up until the 19th century china had considered itself the great power- saw themselves as the middle kingdom between heaven and earth. European powers began to carve up china and it became a colony of all the other great powers. Mao zedong wanted to be a revolutionary state model for other colonized states around the world. Mao wanted to export this revolution- rather than working within the international system he wanted to upset the system. So when he heard ideas about peaceful coexistence this went against everything mao wanted, he criticized them and they criticized him right back. Soviet union and us began to diverge.
