World war 1 lecture 4, january 13, 2016. Not over by christmas: war fever, joining up, the opening battles, the 1st contingent overseas, the western front. Men are worried the war will be over before they get there. Served as an officer in the war in south africa. Decided he would buy his way into the war. Tells the british government he will create his own battalion of 1100 men. Names the battalion after princess patricia of connaught. Puts a call out for men to join his unit. The first unit prepared to go over seas. 80% of volunteers were single when they enlisted. At the beginning of the war and the man was married he would have to provide a letter of consent from his wife. Recruiting officer would determine age and height. Ask if you had any tattoos, marks, scars, missing toes/fingers (used to identify bodies) 1/3 claimed to have military experience a portion of which were lies.
