Victorians have the reputation of being prudish about sex. Victoria society was actually really fascinated by all things sexual especially middle class. In their obsession about not talking about it, it does mean that you really do wanna talk about it. Late 19ths century, we have new middle class. Emerges from the industrial re(cid:448)"(cid:374). (cid:373)iddle (cid:272)alss is bureaucrats (paper pushers) or factory owners, work in offices. Middle class was eager to distinguish themselves from the working class. So they created a new ideology ideology of separate spheres. So they believed men were better suited for public sphere and women for the private sphere. Public sphere consisted of politics and paid work force.
