The study of the history of sexuality did not start until 1960-1970s . Many other emerging social movements during this time. Introduction of birth control pill (single most important invention in the world, revolutionized women!!) Invented for married women b/c not married women didn"t have sex . 2nd wave feminist movement: about women"s rights beyond voting, why were women still suffering from oppression, looked into the history of women, found almost nothing, most history was written by white men. History of sex & sexuality wasn"t being discussed: historians before only wrote about what they thought was important, sex was something they did, not something they wrote about. Social movements fighting for the cause of marginalized groups: helped give rise to the history of sexuality. French philosopher: 1st guy to study the history of sexuality & turn it into its own academic field. Our ideas of sex are shaped and influenced by these discourses/aspects of society.
