In none of these instances, there was no wide spread panic. English came to hate and fear the catholic church. Attributed plots to take over england to anyone who was catholic. Anti-catholic hysteria was behind public panic conspiracy theories for a while. They were trying to return england to the true church just in a different way, not undercover.
