1% of north americans believe that they have been victims of alien abduction. 70-80% believe there is life in the universe: mars attacks. 1870s astronomers announced that they discovered water on mars. We know that they were wrong they didn"t actually have the proof for water on mars, but it was enough to spike peoples interest. Caused some people to believe that there was life on mars. Published a series of books (3) about what life would/could/was like on mars. Claimed that mars was a dying planet. He thought that the inhabitants had built a series of canals to bring water to populated parts of the planet. The scientific community thought he was crazy, but general public loved the idea. Wrote a novel on the same subject. Mass market book to recount a future martian invasion of earth very popular. Based on how invaders from mars would attack planet earth.
