Took epidemic forma in early 20th c in developed nations. 5% of patients die from this w/o treatment: limb paralysis, mild. In 20th c it was endemic, generally mild cases, but starts to take on epidemic form in this century. Must produce more of itself in a human cell, attracted to spinal column. Natural affinity to nervous system, spinal cord and brain stem specifically. Constructions of these cells leads to weakness" controlled by the virus. Not necessarily life threatening but life is affected by side effects. Kids wanna play in splash pads and go swimming. Children mainly got this, not many adult cases. Polio beginning to become an epidemic by this time with spikes in # of cases reported. Countries with advanced indoor facilities/sanitary reform (showers, indoor bathrooms, proper sewage system etc. ) they had the most cases.
