Document Summary

Muscles of the pectoral girdle and upper limb. The brachial plexus is a web of nerves that is located around the subclavian space. The muscles of the pectoral girdle are separated into two groups: muscles that move the shoulder and muscles that move the humerus. The muscles that move the shoulder can be further divided into anterior and posterior muscles. The muscles that move the humerus can be subdivided into axial and scapular muscles, which can each be divided into anterior and posterior muscles. The muscles are organized based on their function. These muscles move the scapula and the clavicle. Many of these muscles are very large and easy to identify. Because they are so large, we often can stimulate specific fibres to cause contraction. This might be a different movement or function in comparison to contracting a separate group of fibres within that large muscle. The trapezius muscle is named after its shape because it is three-sided.
