Guillain-barr syndrome can affect the neurons that control muscle movement (motor neurons); the neurons that transmit sensory signals such as pain, temperature, and touch (sensory neurons); or both. Its sensory neurons monitor tension in the intestinal wall and assess the composition of intestinal contents; its motor neurons exert control over the motility and secretions of the gastrointestinal tract.
