Document Summary
Skin is made up almost entirely of dead cells. Anatomy lecture 3: the integumentary system: the skin acts as a protective layer. Made up mostly of epithelial cells there are more active cells toward the deeper levels: as they move toward the external layer, they die. Epidermis: upper layer of skin above the dermis. Dermis: lower level of skin below the epidermis. Hypodermis: found below the dermis, not part of the skin simply a layer of fat underneath the skin. Sebaceous glands (grease: secrete sebum which protects and conditions the skin, hooked up to the hair follicle allows the surface of the skin to be moist, and not to brittle. Sweat glands: secrete sweat (a blood filtrate) which is mostly water (99%) Important for thermal regulation sweat exerts water across the skin evaporates and you get a cooling sensation from them.
