Document Summary
Great vessels of the systemic circuit: oxygenated blood leaves the heart through aorta, deoxygenated blood returns to heart through superior vena cava (svc) and inferior vena cava (ivc) 3 branches off the arch of the aorta: brachiocephalic trunk splits into right common carotid & subclavian artery, on the right side. Superior & inferior vena cava: svc drains everything above heart. Tributaries things that will ultimately drain into the svc. Internal and external jugular vein: meet up with subclavian veins. Jugular drains from the head: subclavians drain from limbs, both brachiocephalic veins join and drain into svc, veins often referred to as the jugular system. Neck arteries: branches going up the neck, common carotid artery. Internal carotid a: external carotid a, vertebral artery. External carotid artery: supplies the neck, face, and skull, facial a, maxillary a, superficial temporal a. Internal carotid artery: supplies anterior circulation to the base of brain, becomes the middle cerebral artery, contributes to the circle of willis.
