Health sciences 2300a lecture 3: the integumentary system. Hypodermis is not part of the integumentary system mostly fat. Melanin are dark pigment spots that protect nucleus from uv damage. How much melanin and what type you have in keratinocytes determines colour and darkness of skin 2 types of melanin. Make up approximately 90% of epithelial cells in epidermis. Freckles are where keratinocytes increase uptake of melanin. Produce and secrete melanin and release them into keratinocytes. About 8% of epithelial cells in epidermis. Attached to epidermis, move through dermis to get back to cns. About 1% of epithelial cells in epidermis. Lots of activity replication and division of cells. Most damage occurs if uv reaches here since there is the most activity here. Closest cells to the vascular dermis, receives majority of gas. Granulosum (water proofing, last area of oxygenation too far) Too far from supply of oxygen for cells to survive.
