Over time a phenomenon has become understood within the contexts of biomedical understanding. Women have not always gone to the hospital to have a baby. However in the west going to the hospital to have a baby is a normal thing. We can"t understand too much about childhood unless we understand what it means to be a child. One of their critique is that the idea is very linear. One passes through one stage to the next stage to the next stage. This may not always reflect how one goes through development. Something traumatic may happen and a child may not be moving on the linear path. The impact children have on making their own experiences. A lot of the traditional ideas about childhood is that children are miniature adults. Children play an active role in the construction of their childhood. Children"s participation in family, community and culture makes a particular contribution their lives childhood.
