Dsm-5 is the major psychiatric manual in us and canada. The lifetime prevalence of dsm disorders by age - pt 2: older adults with chronic illnesses have more anxiety and mood disorders. Increased further when an older adult has 3 or more chronic illnesses: comorbidity. Major depressive disorder: extremely sad mood lasting for most of time for more than 2 weeks, depressive mood, decreased interest or pleasure in most activities, change in sleep, change in activity (ex. Institutional settings: problems with self care, pain, changes in cognition and personality, bereavement, avoidance as coping strategy, medical disorders. Medical conditions can present significant risk factors: depressive disorders may also cause further impairments in physical and cognitive functioning, examples: arthritis, hip fracture, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, stroke, tooth loss, lack of vitamin d. Suicide rates decrease between 65-69, then increase again 70+ Figure: rates are much higher for men, especially in the 85+ group.
