The Role of Media
Media is not there to educate but for traffic and add revenue, entertainment
How does research get disseminated – how do we tell it to other people?
The researcher will create a Quant study – a priori (means beforehand, in Latin) power analysis to
determine N
• Power analysis – trying to determine how large of a sample we need to reliably come to a conclusion
• Can manipulate your sample size before – a priori
Study protocol submitted for ethics review – must pass ethics
• Recruiting participants – experimenting on people – interviewing
• Protocol must be submitted to the review board of the ethics board – multiple steps
• It is a really slow process – should take 2 months max but took him 15 months to get approved
Posted ads alone – calling and etc. could be used to recruit people
Data is collected and analyzed
Then the paper is written and submitted for peer review
Secondary reporting does not need peer review
What are the issues with research?
• Not all studies are created equal
o Garbage in – garbage out
▪ If your research is garbage then you will get garbage results
• Multiple factors can affect a study’s credibility
o Can happen at multiple points
• Appearing in a scientific journal doesn’t automatically grant credibility
What can go wrong?
• Not all journals employ vigorous or any peer reviews
o Even if they claim that it was
• Lay people – are not qualified to asses people’s worth
Nutrition research
• Why nutrition?
o Applies to everyone – have to eat, get energy from somewhere, and it is of interest to
everyone – esp people with body imaging
• Who is a stakeholder?
o We are all stakeholders
• Who has the power?
o We are stakeholders who have much less power than Coca-Cola
• How do you find out what is good or bad for you?
o Nutrition labels
o Canada’s food guide
o Company claims
o Physicians
▪ From professional development
o Ancestry
o Most people get it from the media
• Does the daily consumption of chocolate have a positive effect in losing weight?
o Where has it failed from the ROAD OF PUBLICATION?
▪ Source material – has a PhD
▪ It was a hoax – a carefully planned sting to expose failures in science reporting
▪ It was a fake institute and published in a fake journal
▪ Real study
