Lecture 10 digestive system i oral cavity & esophagus. Chemical digestion: mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine. Liver: mechanical processing = chewing, chemical secretions by enzymes. Tongue moves food from salivary glands: entry to gi tract. In pharynx, to push food into esophagus: peristalsis vs. segmentation. Mechanical digestion: chewing and churning in the stomach, enzymatic, acids and enzymes secreted to break down proteins and fats, secretions from liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. Mucosa-lined cavity: anterior opening oral orifice, posterior opening oropharynx. Oral cavity proper: area bounded by borders, borders, gums/teeth (anterolateral, palate (superior, tongue (inferior) Vestibule: narrow space between gums/teeth and cheeks/lips. Tongue bound down to floor of mouth through lingual frenulum. Superior & inferior labial frenulum: midline connections to keep structures tight, but still flexible for movement, superior connects superior lip to gum. 2 main arches that anchor tongue and sides of oral cavity to palates.
