Kinesiology 2000A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Participaction, Body Composition, Behavioural Sciences
Document Summary
Many ancient cultures, scientists, and physicians recognized the role of pa in health. By the 1900s, systematic study began and midway through the century, the field of exercise science emerged. Hippocrates - "he must also take exercise" 1900s: systematic study began and midway through the century = exercise science. Contributions to our understanding of pa and health come from several different branches of science: Karvonen (1957): work must be performed at the correct level of intensity, frequency and duration. 1970s: scientific explorations of the effects of various types, intensities, durations, frequencies of endurance exercise on cardiovascular (cv) fitness in patients with cvd. 1980s: moderate-intensity pa yielding decreased cvd development and death. 1990s: health benefits result from moderate-intensity pa; fitness gains are greater with vigorous-intensity pa. Guidelines are supposed to serve as trusted sources for people who don"t necessarily know how to do research on pa and health.
