Kinesiology 2236A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Abdominal Wall, Medical Emergency, Ice Pack
Document Summary
Kinesiology 2236b lecture 20: abdominal and thoracic injuries. 10% of all athletic injuries affect the abdomen. Abdominal injuries are not immediately life threatening unless a major bleed has occurred. Abdominal and thoracic injuries result from high velocity sports, being stuck with an object or use of inadequate protective equipment. Thorax is the portion of the body that lies between the neck and the diaphragm. Main function is to protect circulatory and respiratory organs. This is protected by the spine posteriorly, the ribs laterally, and the sternum anteriorly. Heart and lung injuries are serious and require immediate attention. Blow to front/side usually leads to rib contusion. Manipulation of rib at distance/ through the ring , does not increase pain. # at site of trauma kick/punch. # away from the impact as a result of compression football, wrestling. Usually at weakest point (posterior) angle of ribs. Pain with manipulation away from injury, through ring.
