Kinesiology 2236A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ankylosing Spondylitis, Clonus, Frequent Urination
Document Summary
Problem: pancreas fails to produce enough endogenous insulin o: cant get sugar out of blood into cells o, leads to dependence on exogenous insulin. Type 2- 90% (later in life-unhealthy lifestyle) o o o. Significant resistance at the cellular level (transporters aren"t functioning) Insulin binds to insulin receptors so glucose transporters cant work. Type 1 no insulin; type 2 no insulin transporters. Sugar present in blood stream, but can"t get in to tissue. Acidosis: ketoacidosis present in breath- fruity smell. Frequent urination and thirst (fluid filtering out sugar) Minimal sugar in the bloodstream: too much insulin, not enough food- hunger, excessive exercise. Major signs and symptoms of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia are similar: Altered level of consciousness (dizzy, drowsy and/or confused) Ask if they have eaten or taken insulin; ask the right questions. Juice, hard candy, glucose tablets, non-diet soft drinks. Monitor 5 minutes after giving them something and see results. Refer for advanced emergency medical care o o o.
