Document Summary

Traumatic (acute) occurs suddenly and has a clearly defined cause or onset: occur when tissue loading is sufficient to cause sudden irreversible deformation of the tissue, usually in high speed speed sport with or without high energy contact. Extrinsic/external - originating outside the anatomical limits of a part. Intrinsic/internal- belonging to or lying within a given part. Work together to increase chance of injury. Contractile tissue with central function to generate power. Isometric-- muscle contractions in which length of muscle stays constant: moderate force. Concentric -- muscle shortens while contracting against resistance: reduced force with increased speed. Eccentric-- muscle lengthens while contracting against resistance: maximal force, increased force with increased speed, greater risk of injury but you generate more force. Generally, occur is 2 ways: 1) distension strains/pulled muscle , 2) direct trauma contusion/laceration. More common in 2 joint muscles: hamstrings, satorius, bicep.
