Women dependent on a paternalist/patriarchal british regime: patriarchy = ordering society with men at the head of everything. Private clubs to pursue social and economic interests. Exclusively for men, excluded lower classes and women: for a certain kinds of men. Eligibility could be taken away for your actions in public. Significance: social club with some recreation, reinforce hierarchy/privilege. Told stories of their achievements as men. Mimicking of stories of the voyageurs: used hands as paddles and sing songs. 120 bottles of wine used, yet only 20 people present. Note: interesting that these men who mimicked the voyageurs were a long way removed from the men who actually worked in the fur trade. An important social institution: not exclusive, everyone was welcome. Made drinking out to be a sport: e. g. who could drink the most. Organized horse bets, etc: athlete backers, venue providers, source of recreation. Alcohol pervaded into social live everywhere: a daily ritual to many.
