Single-scull rowing was one of canada"s most popular sports during the late 19th century. His dad owned a hotel and was a fisherman. Legends say hanlan learned how to row by smuggling rum across lake ontario or by fishing. Learned outside of any rowing club, was part of the working class. One of the first scullers to master the sliding seat technique: ned hanlan was 5"7 and 154lbs and needed to use his lower body in order to compete with bigger, stronger men. Boat he used was paid for by his wealthy backers who became a key part of his career: entered him in races.
