Document Summary

Lecture 28: bodies of meaning (chapter 1) march 29, 2017. Schooling a lived" experience to be effective. Euro-canadian sports, games to change values and behaviours. Policy shifts shaped the types of opportunities available. Before 1951: extra-curricular: mostly military drills, gymnastics, calisthenics. After 1951: pe program: more organized sports. Kids were overworked, malnourished, vulnerable to disease. Terrible living conditions in the rooms and poor air circulation. No infrastructure to isolate or heal sick kids so diseases spread rapidly. Saw physical education as a cheap way of addressing health concerns in these schools. Why did nobody do anything: most didn"t know about the amount of death occurring in residential schools, those who did know believed the cause was worth the cost. Calisthenics introduced in 1910: weight training with your own body, cheap, you don"t need equipment to do calisthenics. Could be performed indoors: little space, no equipment.
