Mood disturbance influences mood regulation beyond the usual variations. Persistent low mood & inability to find enjoyment in activities. Lack of motivation to begin or continue activities. Depressive disorder aka major depression (unipolar major depression) Depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure are primary symptoms: not driven by physiological causes (e. g. drugs) or medical conditions (e. g, not driven by physiological causes (e. g. drugs) or medical conditions (e. g. hypothyroidism) Episodes last ~9 months if untreated: 80-90% remit within two years of first episode, 50% will recur. Symptoms cause significant impairment in social, work, or other important areas. Higher familial prevalence (i. e. stronger genetic component) Duration of ~2 years for adults, ~1 year for children. Women twice as likely to be diagnosed as men. Marked by manic and depressive states, but of insufficient intensity/duration to diagnose as bipolar or major depressive.
