Kinesiology 3336A/B Lecture 6: 6 On Field Assessment, Sideline Assessment and Return to Sport Testing
Document Summary
On-field assessment, sideline assessment and return to sport testing. Two joint muscles most at risk - gastrocs, rectus femoris, hamstrings. Muscles having more type 2 (fast twitch fibers) are more likely to strain. Muscle strains occur as a result of forcible stretching of a muscle, either passively or when the muscle is activated. Stretching past the resting length necessary to cause injury. Frequently injured muscles act in an eccentric fashion fashion. These contractions develop greater tension than concentric contractions i. e. (gastrocs act eccentrically to limit dorsiflexion during change of direction) Medial head is particularly susceptible near mt junction: aka tennis leg, moi: sports with sudden stops and starts. Usually during sports with quick start and stops. Stops with foot planted and suddenly extends the knee. Worse with walking and jogging than sprinting. Sttt (+) for contractile tissue: must differentiate gastrocnemius from soleus, bent knee for soleus, straight for gastrocs. May be palpable defect: check mt junction!
