Kinesiology 3347A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Umbilical Cord, Birth Weight, Prenatal Development
Document Summary
Growth and development- physical growth, maturation, and aging. Both genetic and extrinsic factors combine to influence growth and aging. Universality: patterns that hold for all humans. ** note these are both occurring at the same time, yes there are universal similarities but there is variation within this universality. Grwoth begins w/ an ovum (egg) and sperm fuse to form a zygote. The embryo or fetus is sensitive to extrinsic factors ex) abdominal pressure, viruses etc. Day 4-5: morula, this is a 16 cell being. Days after: blastocyst, which turns to a fetus. Here the blastocyst is implanted in the uterine wall. The cells continue to cleave (double) and by this point we are hundreds of cells. Differentiation (specialization) of cells to form specific tissues and organs occur. Genetics of embryo guide this. limb rudiments are formed at 4 weeks. Human form is noticeable at 8 weeks (eyes, ears, nose, mouth etc. )
