Christianity is compared to bugs, mark is corn weevil which symbolically devours corn i. e. everything that is good in ray"s life. Internal struggle with what he should be doing vs. what he is doing (guilt) Faith vs. cynicism with salinger starting being cynical then eventually sees the game and has faith in family and baseball. Idealism and faith in baseball ends up saving his farm consequences of idealism are omitted from the novel. Escape from his mundane life which ends up being his spirituality.
