Kinesiology 3476F/G Lecture 10: Youth Obesity
Document Summary
One of the biggest challenges we currently face in society is obesity. Youth obesity has received a lot of attention in recent years and affects all types of socioeconomic countries. In canada, childhood obesity has a prevalence rate of about 13%. Health consequences of sedentarism lead to obesity and you are twice as likely to become obese if you live a sedentary lifestyle. These consequences can include health risks such as type 2 diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease to name a few. Environmental and personal factors can influence obesity in our society. Environmental influences include the built environment, the community and school structures. Lower education leads to higher obesity rates and thus, education is tied to income. This means that a higher education is better because it allows you to have better resources for healthier food choices, better neighbourhoods with access to parks and athletic facilities, as well as access to health care and insurance.
