Kinesiology 3550A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Job Satisfaction, Preempt, Job Rotation
Document Summary
Occupational health: workplace programs for promotion of work related factors affecting worker health. Paradox of work: work necessary for wellbeing but poorly designed jobs lead to injury/death. Make workplace better, not people work less. Hazard: set of circumstances that can lead to injury/illness/property damage: environment, equipment, task. Five main hazards: workplace/equipment: design to minimize physical stress, physical design, training, physical loading, operating procedures job fragmentation. Result from functional allocation whereby humans are left to do what machines cannot. Repetitive tasks paced by machine worker skill and cognition no longer needed inc stress. Solution: job pride (emphasize on craftsmanship & skill), enrichment/enlargement (inc # of different related activites), give responsibility of quality control, hands off mgmt. (self pacing) Stages of organization responsiveness: reactive: intervention post-situation, aka microergonomics, aimed at individual/small group of workers, short term solutions, proactive: pre-empt events, apply ergonomic principles in design (products, workstations, programs ect)
