A living vaccine prepared from attenuated m. bovis. Controversial due to variable efficacy (~80% or much less) for pulmonary tb. Vaccinated individuals can give a false positive for the tuberculin test. Recommended for individuals with high risk to exposure. In 2009, 33. 3 million people were living with hiv infection. In 2009, ~2 billion people (cid:523)one third of the world"s population(cid:524) were infected with. Individuals infected with hiv are ~30-times more likely to develop tuberculosis. At least one third of the persons living with hiv infection are co-infected with tb. Tb is a leading killer of hiv-positive people causing one fourth of all hiv-related deaths. A chronic disease caused by mycobacterium leprae. Very slow progression incubation period of ~5 years. Can cause permanent damage to skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Leprosy is very rare in developed countries. ~ 2 million people are permanently disabled by leprosy, mainly in tropical developing countries (this may be a low estimate)
