Beliefs convictions about things individuals generally hold to be true: do not need evidence, often connected to religion, grow from what we experience, develop to form strong opinions. Both are important for developing a personal philosophy. Roots: family of origin, culture, religion, education. Values are statements of what are normative standards: found in cno bpgs, respect, human dignity, clients are experts in own lives; leaders, clients goals control hc team actions, timeliness, responsiveness, universal access. Values must have social validity and fit into reality. Provides a framework for evaluation of the nurse: should be visible to the public how these values fit into nursing and health care. Cognitive step: choosing what the values are. Affective step: coming to prize the value through an emotional connection. Behaving: acting on the values chosen. Should not define nursing as what we do, but rather by its beliefs and values.
