Legislative authority: health protection and promotion act (1990: designates diseases and conditions that are reportable to the health unit, mandated to protect and promote the health of the public. Infectious disease control team: follow-up of reportable diseases. Team of 15 people roughly 50/50 phis & phns. Must be reported by: physicians and other practitioners laboratories, school principals, hospitals, directors of institutions. To provide client & contact follow-up (think: cast a net wide enough, fast enough offer right medications to the right people in order to prevent further spread) To prevent or mitigate further spread in the community (i. e. most often to classmates & co-workers) Have they been around anyone who was sick?: discuss methods of preventing transmission, discuss contact tracing (if applicable) Allows us to understand the types, (cid:494)amounts(cid:495) & causes of disease(cid:523)s(cid:524) in our area. Plan new programs & strengthen existing ones.
