Pathology 3240A Lecture 4: Class 4.docx
Document Summary
When cell totally loses function, cell death occurs even though cell is dead, don"t know it: first you get changes in electron microscopy, under light microscope, wont see it until a few hours later, under naked eye, much longer (gross morphologic changes, just because it looks completely normal, could be dead! Cell injury response to injury depends on type, duration and severity consequences on cell injury depend on type, state and adaptability of injured cell: ie. blood vessel clogged, in leg, not a big deal, if in heart way worse, different cells have different demands and adapt differently some parts of body can heal very quickly (ie. liver) or some heal slower. Stop maintaining gradient: supply of atp decreases, plasma membrane swells, osmotic gradient pulls in water, get blebs forming in microvilli, increase surface area the desmosomes get strectched apart and spaces form.
