Pharmacology 2060A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Adverse Drug Reaction, Histamine Receptor, Medical Error
Document Summary
Module 10 adverse drug reactions and medication errors. This represents 185,000 people per year: adverse drug reactions can include, side effects, drug toxicity, allergic reaction. Side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth and urinary retention. In the figure you can see that histamine binding to the histamine receptor in sinuses causes vasodilation, which results in runny nose and watery eyes. Antihistamines act by blocking the effect of histamine causing vasoconstriction and blocking these symptoms. Side effects occur when antihistamines bind to either histamine receptors or other receptors in the brain (causes drowsiness). When histamine binds to different receptors in the brain side effects include sedation, dry mouth and urinary retention. Therefore e ven small doses can produce severe allergy: ~ 10% of all adrs are related to drug allergy, very few drugs cause allergic reactions. The most common drug class to cause drug allergy are the penicillin(s).
