Document Summary

Lecture 8 notes 2 - some more faraday"s law / lenz"s. The area vector a is directed perpendicular to the surface. The induced current itself generates a magnetic field! From the direction of the induced current, we can use yet another right-hand rule to find the direction of the magnetic field generated by the current. The flux that comes from the field which is generated by the induced current tends to cancel out the increase in flux that induced the current in the first place. The direction of an induced current is such that the magnetic field (and thus flux) generated by that induced current opposes the change in magnetic flux that created the induced current. Moving a bar magnet towards a loop of wire produces a current. When this current flows around the loop, it dissipates energy. By lenz"s law, we know that the field produced by the induced current must exert a repulsive force on the moving magnet.
