Physics 1402A/B Lecture 11: Lecture 11 Notes - SHM2 (Pendulums)
Document Summary
Describe simple harmonic motion (shm) with a linear restorative force quantitatively. In simple harmonic motion, there is always a force that attempts to bring the mass back to it"s equilibrium position. Pendulums we do some rearranging and approximations with shm stuff to get (where we were using l = r = the length of the string attaching a mass to it"s pivot point) Thus, we compare the two kinds of shm we"ve analysed (pendulums and mass-spring systems) to get. So we analysed how to find the concepts we looked at before, for pendulums this time. Mass is not concentrated in a bob at the bottom. In this case l (or r) is the distance from the centre of mass to the pivot point. We get the same thing we did before with w2 = g/l, just to get there we had to rearrange differently.
