Poly sci lecture 3- power, authority and democracy. Power: if they told us to do something we would do it, cohersion- unwanted, there"s always some sort of threat involved. Authority: source of power is legitimate, consent, distribution of power (always uneven, we accept the outcomes as something that stems from a legitimate process. Traditional: based on long-standing customs and values: monarchy, religious authority. Charismatic: personal traits of leader; highly motivation and convincing: only found in certain individuals, specifically, in personality traits of a leader, outgoing, well spoken, brave, firm belief in ideals, charming and persuasive, passionate, confident, highly motivating, manipulative. What kind of mixture do we tend to get in liberal democracies: charismatic and legal- rational, traditional and legal- rational, hillary: legal rational, trump: more charismatic than hillary. First face: direct action on a person. I make you do something you wouldn"t otherwise do: advantages: really obvious.
