Document Summary

Equality is a more controversial value than justice or liberty. Some claim that equality (i. e. we should have the same things ) expresses envy, promotes a culture of dependency ( from cradle to grave state) , and overrides individual responsibility (life outcomes depending on individual choice) Freedom or equality pick one. (liberty upsets patterns nozick) Others claim that equality is incomplete with our commitment to individualism . Equality is a comparative concept, but comparisons are relatively unimportant. What matters is: sufficiency, meeting needs, concerns for the least advantaged (rawlf) But you can be against equality while being for redistributive taxation . We are all unequal in many ways: intelligence, sex, gender, race, age, religion, social and family background, skills. Almost everyone believes in equality in some sense. We aren"t equal, but the state should treat us as such: the interests of each member of the community are equally valued.
